ISO Survey reveals increase in ISO certificates worldwide
Each year in autumn, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) releases statistics regarding the development of their management system standards. The current numbers as of the end on 2016 confirm the continuing increase in the number of certified organisations worldwide. With regard to the most important ISO standards, there was again a notable increase of 8 % to a grand total of 1.6 million ISO certificates issued worldwide. Newly included in the ISO survey were the standards ISO 28000 for security management systems in the supply chain (356 certificates) and ISO 39001 for traffic safety (478 certificates).
The globally relatively uncommon standard for Business Continuity Management (BCM), ISO 22301, has continued to increase, with a growth of 23 percent (3,853 certificates); India (1,607 certificates) maintains its top spot.
ISO/IEC 27001, the standard for information security management systems (ISMS), with an increase of 21 percent (33,290 certificates) has grown significantly and fulfilled expectations. The leader here is still Japan (8,945).
The international standard for food safety, ISO 22000, is stagnating at 32,139 certificates. China is leading with 11,069 certificates.
The largest rate of growth, at 63 percent, was achieved by the standard for IT service management, ISO 20000-1. Worldwide, until the end of 2016, 4,537 certificates were issued, most of them in China (1,666).
The environmental standard ISO 14001, with a worldwide increase of 8 percent during 2016, has now achieved 326,189 certificates, of which 23,167 were according to the 2015 version. With considerably more than 100,000 certificates, China (137,230) leads the pack on ISO 14001.
The automotive standard ISO/TS 16949 continues its growth trend to increase the number of certificates by 7 percent to 67,358. The Top Ten list is led by China (28,830).
The energy management standard ISO 50001, with an increase of 58 percent, has experienced another significant increase compared to the previous year to currently 18,976 certificates worldwide - and the trend is for further growth. The majority of about 90 percent have been issued in Europe.
The standard for medical products, ISO 13485, has grown by 13 percent worldwide (29,585 certificates).The US (5,298) are leading here.
Finally, after six years of stagnation, ISO 9001 is showing a significant increase of 6.8 percent to a total of 1,106356 certificates in 187 countries (of which only 80,596 certificates according to ISO 9001:2015). The largest number of certificates were issued in China, with an increase of 20 percent (350,631).
